Outreach
The Arabesque Winds joined the Young Audiences of Rochester roster in fall 2009. Young Audiences offers a complete menu of arts-in-education services to schools in the Rochester area. Artists on their roster live up to rigorous standards of artistic excellence, education effectiveness, and professionalism. If you'd like the Arabesque Winds to perform one of the following dynamic presentations in your school or community venue, contact so and so.
Move Your Body Through Music
During this dynamic presentation, young students will be invited to get up and move to music of Hindemith, Danzi, Barber, and Ligeti. Students will discover that some music is inspired by dance, and will be taught basic dance steps. Then, students will be invited to imagine dances for different styles of music. Finally, students will be taught simple contrasting dance movements that express the music, and will work together to perform with the quintet. (Grades K-5)
NOTE: The same presentation is adaptable for an older audience. The performance will be supplemented by a video featuring examples of different dance styles. Students will see traditional dance forms as well as folk dance from Eastern Europe and Africa.
Storytelling Through Music
Students will engage their imaginations in this presentation, which uses the music of Hindemith and Barber to construct a story. Students will first be encouraged to freely imagine pictures, emotions, or events that match the music, and to share these associations with the group. Then, students will work together to decide upon the character, setting, and plot of a story described by the music. Finally, the complication of the plot will be resolved. (Grades 6-12)
NOTE: This same presentation is adaptable to a younger audience. Students will be provided a narrative framework with more structure, and will be asked to contribute to the story one word at a time.
An Interactive Introduction to Chamber Music
Students will assume a hands-on approach in this presentation, an introduction to the fundamentals of chamber music. Through a series of interactive games, students will be introduced to the tonal and dynamic extremes of each instrument in the quintet. Students will discover that chamber music requires teamwork and sensitivity to detail. Finally, students will appreciate the influence of folk music on Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti.
A Woodwind Quintet Concerto and Residency
In this multi-part program, the Arabesque Winds will perform as soloists alongside a student wind ensemble. Students will interact repeatedly with the Arabesque Winds in all stages of preparation for the performance. First, students will collaborate with the members of the quintet in three rehearsals. Then, the quintet will perform a brief recital and presentation for the students. Finally, the quintet will act as soloists in an evening concert alongside the students. The program will allow young musicians to develop a rich relationship with the members of the quintet through repeated interaction. (Grades 7-12 Band)
NOTE: The special fee for this program includes five total services, transportation, and sheet music. |
